Don’t be weird about A24
It’s a distributor with a pretty excellent track record, with some occasional misses as well. But A24's rise has a tendency to inspire weird pronouncements.
A24, the film and television distribution company, has been around for barely a decade. But it can point to many successes: Two Best Picture Oscars (Moonlight and Everything Everywhere All at Once), which were among the more richly deserved of the last few years. In 2023, the year of EEAAO, A24 swept all four acting awards and won Best Picture and Best Director.
The company has also cultivated a reputation for artist-friendliness and for encouraging the work of rising auteurist directors like Barry Jenkins, Ari Aster, Greta Gerwig, Alex Garland, and the Safdie brothers. Its TV wing, meanwhile, is responsible for Euphoria, Ramy, Beef, and I’m Sorry.
No, their track record isn’t 100 percent hits or creative triumphs, but A24 seems to have a higher hit rate when it comes to delivering good movies than most Hollywood studios while taking more chances than a typical studio. And they’ve been quite influential, too- look over at the slate of Searchlight Pictures, Amazon/MGM, or NEON, and you’ll see a lot of movies that feel like they could have been A24’s.
