Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone had a chance to relax and have fun over the holidays. I spent the week on vacation and went seven days without seeing any movies for the first time all year, except for a couple of things I watched on airplanes (neither of which, I can’t stretch enough, merits mention here.) Thank you for reading my scheduled posts while I was away.
This newsletter launched at the beginning of September, four months ago, and there have been 83 posts to date. I’ve reviewed dozens of new movies, looked back on lots of old ones, and even gone in detail through every single 2023 release. I’ve told you the things I believe about movies, I’ve asked why Hamas would care what Steven Spielberg thinks, I’ve antagonized the dead-enders of the Derek Chauvin Innocence Project, and I’ve noted the return of sex to the movies.
Thus far, all posts have been free for all, but as promised previously, this newsletter is going reader-supported, starting today.
Here’s how it will work: For $6 a month (or $60 a year), you’ll get access to all new posts, plus the entire archive, and the ability to participate in the comments section. Reviews of new-release features and documentary films will remain free for everyone, but other posts — essays, movie anniversary pieces, and the Friday notes column — will be paid-only.
You can adjust your subscription by typing your email into the subscription box that should be attached to this post.
There’s a lot to come, movie-wise in the next few months: The awards season, new movies from Bong Joon-ho, George Miller, Alex Garland, and one of the Coen Brothers, and the major anniversaries of Dr. Strangelove, Blazing Saddles, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. As well as, I’m sure, certain major film topics that are not yet on anyone’s radar.
Once again, I very much appreciate the support so far, especially those who pledged even before now. Thank you for coming with me on this journey.
