The 2024 Golden Globes: A bad show, with good winners

The jokes bombed, the presentation was a fiasco- and most of the right movies and shows own

The Golden Globes returned Sunday night, for its show under its new ownership structure, and for the first time on CBS. 

There were two key takeaways from the night: The show itself was an absolute disaster, plagued by the wrong choice of host, horrible material, unwatchable bits, and generally awful production values. 

But on the other hand, the choices of winners were mostly right. 

The show was hosted by Jo Koy, an actor, and comedian with a not particularly high profile; if not for a comedy movie of his a couple of years ago, Easter Sunday, I probably would have never heard of him. His opening monologue, in particular, was dead on arrival both in the room and in social media reactions, even before he made a feeble joke about Taylor Swift that Taylor herself completely no-sold. (Koy was long a panelist on Chelsey Lately; that show’s host, Chelsea Handler, will host the Critics Choice Awards next week.)
