Who cares if a blockbuster wins Best Picture?
The Russo brothers stepped in it again with a dumb point about Harvey Weinstein.
Aside from people who have committed an actual crime, is there any bigger villain in Hollywood today than Joe and Anthony Russo?
The brothers spent many years directing episodes critically acclaimed TV shows like Arrested Development, Community and Happy Endings, before pivoting to Marvel movies, directing some of the more beloved entries of the MCU’s middle era (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.)
More recently, though, the Russos have pivoted to making very, very bad movies for streaming services, like Cherry, The Gray Man, and the new The Electric State (I have not seen the latter, but it got some of the year’s worse reviews.) They did produce the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once, although they didn’t direct it, and are set to return to Marvel for the upcoming new Avengers movies.
Those streaming films have not only been unwatchable but they’ve been produced with a specific aesthetic that’s especially ugly. Not only that, but the Russos frequently say things in interviews that make people’s heads explode, even if they’re not taking ridiculous shots at Martin Scorsese, a man whose worst movies are better than their best.
This weekend, while promoting the new Netflix film, the Russos gave an interview to the British newspaper The Times.
Right at the top, the piece treats it as some crisis, or perhaps a tragedy, that the films that win at the Oscars tend not to be huge box office hits. Anora, after all, was the #85 film at the box office in 2024. Then again, the year before that, the Oscars was dominated by Oppenheimer, which was a box office phenomenon, although with Barbie, which was an even bigger hit.
The Russos’ answer? Even stupider than you thought.
